Hepatitis A Vaccine
The Hepatitis A vaccine protects the Hepatitis A virus. The vaccine has made the disease less common in the United States, but outbreaks among unvaccinated people still happen. The CDC recommends that all children get the vaccine between 12 to 23 months as well as infants aged 6 through 11 months travelling outside the United States for added protection.
In addition to administering Hepatitis A Vaccines, we aim to educate our patients and community at large. We see our role, especially in this day and age, as one that provides education to our community. That’s what matters most to us.
As a condition of employment, Voyage Medical requires all new hires to be fully educated on Hepatitis A and the Vaccines for it.
Symptoms of Hepatitis A
Many people, usually children, don’t have symptoms of Hepatitis A. 2 to 7 weeks after infection, symptoms develop. Some people can be ill for as long as 6 months, but for some, symptoms usually last less than two months.
If symptoms develop, they can include:
- Yellow skin or eyes
- Loss of appetite
- Upset stomach
- Throwing up
- Stomach pain
- Dark urine or light- colored stools
- Joint pain
- Feeling tired
People At Risk of Hepatitis A Disease
There is a risk that people who have not been vaccinated or previously infected can get infected with the hepatitis A virus. In areas where the virus is widespread (high endemicity), most hepatitis A infections occur during early childhood. There are risk factors and they include:
- poor sanitation;
- lack of safe water;
- living in a household with an infected person;
- being a sexual partner of someone with acute hepatitis A infection;
- use of recreational drugs;
- sex between men; and
- travelling to areas of high endemicity without being immunized.
In order to prevent Hepatitis A disease people should improve sanitation, food safety and immunization. Having adequate supplies of safe drinking water, proper disposal of sewage within communities, and improving personal hygiene practices such as frequent hand washing before and after eating and after using the bathroom can help control the spread of this disease as well.
